Nuclear fusion could one day provide us with clean electricity

Nuclear fusion engineers are starting to design a European power station they hope will mimic how the sun works to provide a clean, almost unlimited source of energy on Earth.

Today marks the beginning of a five-year “conceptual design” phase to flesh out key technology decisions for the DEMOnstration power plant (DEMO), a project backed by a Europe-wide consortium, EuroFusion, to take fusion power from the concept stage to a commercial reality. The group plans for the 300 to 500 megawatt …

MIT’s New Tool for Tackling Hard Computational Problems

Some difficult computation problems, depicted by finding the highest peak in a “landscape” of countless mountain peaks separated by valleys, can take advantage of the Overlap Gap Property: At a high enough “altitude,” any two points will be either close or far apart — but nothing in-between. David Gamarnik has developed a new tool, the…

Plasma-based engineering creates contact-killing, antifouling, drug-release surfaces

The deepening concern over antibiotic-resistant infections, coupled with prevailing hospital-acquired infections from surgical tools, implants, and heavily touched surfaces, has ramped up antimicrobial material development in recent years. Conventional wet-chemistry methods used to create biocidal materials are complex, time-consuming, and expensive. In the Journal of Applied Physics, by AIP Publishing, researchers from Belgium, Czech Republic,…
