Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old IT specialist from Iowa who has also worked for Google and Pinterest, said in an interview with CBS ’60 Minutes on Sunday that Facebook is much worse than anything she has seen before.
– Still away, Facebook shows that they choose profit over security. They subsidize and pay for their profit with our security, Haugen said. She believes that Facebook must be regulated.
– The version of Facebook that exists today, tears our societies to pieces and contributes to ethnic violence around the world, she says.
Storm
The storm has raged around Facebook since Haugen anonymously leaked documents to Congress and the Wall Street Journal as showed how Facebook knew that their products, including Instagram, harm young girls, especially in relation to the body.
In 60 Minutes, she explained how Facebook adjusts its algorithms to trigger reactions, and says that their own research shows that it is easier to trigger hatred than other emotions.
They understand that if they change the algorithms in a safer direction, people will spend less time on the site and click less on the ads, so they make less money, she said.
Facebook rejects
She said that Facebook during the election last year realized the danger that such content poses, and therefore introduced security systems temer. But as soon as the election was over, they went back to the way it was.
– They prioritize growth over security. To me, it seems like a betrayal of democracy, she said.
Facebook Vice President Nick Clegg calls the accusations misleading and denies that Facebook’s own research warned that Instagram is harmful to young girls
Although Haugen does not draw a direct line between Facebook and the storming of Congress on January 6, Clegg said that such a link is also ridiculous.
