Dec. 11 (UPI) — Apple released new software updates Wednesday for its newest versions of iPhone, iPad and Mac that will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Siri.

The artificial intelligence chatbot will be available for Siri voice assistant and the new Writing Tools feature on its newer devices, Apple announced Wednesday, calling it “AI for the rest of us” as the company brings greater access to Apple Intelligence on iPhone.

“Apple today announced the release of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2, introducing a brand-new set of Apple Intelligent features that will elevate users’ experience with iPhone, iPad and Mac,” the California tech giant wrote in a statement.

“Built into your iPhone, iPad and Mac to help you write, express yourself and get things done effortlessly,” Apple said, as it assured users that privacy protections are part of the update.

“Draws on your personal context without allowing anyone else to access your personal data — not even Apple,” the company said, adding that Open AI would not store requests.

The new updates will allow users of iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 model to use Apple Intelligence to ask Siri complicated questions. With permission to access to ChatGPT, Siri will provide a direct response without users having to jump between applications.

“With ChatGPT integrated into Writing Tools and Siri, users can tap into ChatGPT’s expertise without having to switch between apps, helping them get things done faster and easier than ever before,” Apple said.

Apple launched its iPhone 16 in September. It is the company’s first iPhone to incorporate artificial intelligence.

Apple’s new Writing Tools feature, also available Wednesday, allows users to ask ChatGPT to generate written content. Users can use ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities to add images to their writing.

“With enhanced language capabilities, you can summarize an entire lecture in seconds, get the short version of a long group threat and minimize unnecessary distractions with prioritized notifications.”

Image Playground allows users to create unique images, even images of people using photos from their photo library. It also allows users to create animation and illustration.

“Now users can explore creative new ways to express themselves visually with Image Playground, create the perfect emoji for any situation with Genmoji and make their writing even more dynamic with new enhancements to Writing Tools,” Apple said.

Genmoji allows Apple Intelligence users to create new emojis, by typing descriptions on their keyboard or accessing images from their photo library. Genmoji can be added to messages or shared as a sticker.

Image Wand makes note-taking more visual by transforming a “rough sketch into a polished image by simply circling it.”

Apple plans to release another update to Apple Intelligence sometime next year that will give Siri the ability to take actions inside of apps.
