Big 12 tiebreaker scenarios: What must happen for Colorado to reach the title game?

Once in control of its own destiny, Colorado football’s Week 13 loss to Kansas has put a damper on the Buffs’ Big 12 championship game hopes. The Buffs still have a couple of possible routes to Arlington, but they must beat Oklahoma State in their regular season finale and receive ample help from other teams in Week 14.

Entering this final week of the regular season, Colorado, Iowa State, Arizona State and BYU are all tied atop the Big 12 standings at 6-2. Five other teams are 5-3 and mathematically still in contention for a title game berth.

Below are the various first-place tiebreaker scenarios in the Big 12 entering Week 14:

If two teams finish tied at 7-2, they’ll face each other in the conference championship game. This is the most simple and obvious potential outcome of Week 14.

Below are the three-team tiebreakers, which are somewhat more complicated:

If Colorado is the only current first-place team to lose in Week 14, Arizona State, Iowa State and BYU will finish tied for first place at 7-2. In this scenario, Arizona State will face Iowa State in the championship game (BYU loses the tiebreaker).

An Arizona State loss to Arizona combined with wins by Colorado, Iowa State and BYU will provoke another three-team tiebreaker. Here, Iowa State and BYU prevail (Colorado loses the tiebreaker).

If Iowa State loses to Kansas State, the three-team tiebreaker between Arizona State, Colorado and BYU isn’t friendly toward the Buffs. ASU would face BYU in the conference title game (Colorado loses the tiebreaker).

This is the lone three-time tiebreaker situation that favors Colorado — sort of. Here’s how the Big 12 Conference breaks down a BYU loss (three-team tiebreaker between Colorado, ASU and Iowa State):

  • If Texas Tech defeats West Virginia, then…
  • If Baylor beats Kansas and Cincinnati beats TCU: Colorado vs. Iowa State
  • Otherwise: Colorado vs. Arizona State
  • If West Virginia defeats Texas Tech: Arizona State vs. Iowa State

If Colorado, Iowa State, Arizona State and BYU each win to finish 7-2, the Big 12 championship game will feature Arizona State vs. Iowa State.

Entering Week 14, five Big 12 teams are tied for second place at 5-3: Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia. These 5-3 teams must win (obviously) and have at least three of the four 6-2 teams lose.

If Colorado beats Oklahoma State on Friday, two possible scenarios would then get the Buffs into the Big 12 championship game.

No. 1: Two of Arizona State, BYU and Iowa State lose

No. 2: Houston beats BYU AND Texas Tech beats West Virginia
