Bridgerton, Stranger Things, Bird Box … What are the most watched series and movies on Netflix?

Netflix had already unveiled its most popular programs. The platform now introduces a new method of calculation which changes its ranking.

Until now, when Netflix deigned to communicate its “audiences”, the company totaled the number of subscriber accounts having viewed at least two minutes of a program. This time around, the streaming giant took an interest in the total number of hours watched for a program in the 28 days following its release on the platform. This method of calculation somewhat upsets the ranking of the most popular series and movies on Netflix. Side series, “The Chronicle of Bridgerton” is essential with these two systems of classification. The royal series also attracted the largest number of accounts (82 million worldwide) and accumulated the largest number of hours watched, 625 million in total. If the first season of “Lupine, in the shadow of Arsene” comes in second place by taking the first method of calculation (76 million connected accounts), it is “La casa de papel: part 4” which takes its up with the other method thanks to 619 million hours streamed. On the third step, season 3 of the series “Stranger Things” exceeds the first season of “The Witcher” in terms of hours watched with 582 million against 541 million for the adaptation of the literary saga.

“Bird Box” and “Tyler Rake” always on top

When it comes to films, the action movie “Tyler Rake” starring Chris Hemsworth tops the charts with 99 million accounts having discovered at least two minutes of the film within 28 days of its release on the platform. The dystopian film “Bird Box” takes second place with 89 million accounts while “Spenser Confidential” with Mark Wahlberg takes third place with 85 million accounts. In terms of the number of hours watched, the top 10 is slightly different. “Bird Box” carried by Sandra Bullock takes first place with 282 million hours against 231 million for “Tyler Rake”. Finally if “Spenser Confidential” comes third of the most watched films in relation to the number of accounts, it is the epic film “The Irishman” with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro which wins with 215 million hours watched. Despite these different rankings, many voices had nonetheless criticized the Netflix system for ranking its best programs, counting only the number of accounts and not of people.
