The coronavirus pandemic has caused at least 4,830,270 deaths in the world since the WHO office in China reported the appearance of the disease in December 2019, according to a balance established by AFP from official sources.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 236,665,980 people have contracted the illness. The vast majority of patients recover, but a still poorly evaluated part maintains symptoms for weeks or even months.
Figures are based on reports reported daily by the health authorities of each country and exclude the corrections made a posteriori by the different statistical agencies that conclude that the number of deaths is much more important.
The WHO even estimates that if the overmortality linked to covid-19, direct and indirect, is taken into account, the balance of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially registered. An important part of less serious or asymptomatic cases remains undetected despite the intensification of testing in many countries.
On Thursday 8,261 new cases were registered in the world deaths and 449,480 infections. The countries that registered the most deaths according to the latest official balances are the United States with 2,508, Russia (936) and Mexico (514).
The number of deaths in the States United amounts to 710,180 with 44,159,120 infections. After the United States, the countries with the most fatalities are Brazil, with 599,810 deaths and 21,532,558 cases, India, with 450,127 deaths (33,915,569 cases), Mexico, with 281,121 deaths (3,707,234 cases), and Russia, with 214,485 deaths (7,717,356 cases).
Among the most affected countries, Peru has the highest mortality rate, with 605 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed from Bosnia (330), North Macedonia (326), Montenegro (314), Hungary (313), and Bulgaria (308).
