The government of the state of São Paulo is studying the application of a fourth dose of vaccine against Covid to the entire population of São Paulo. The fourth dose, so far, has only been applied to immunosuppressed people.
According to the coordinator of the State Immunization Program, Regiane de Paula, in order to advance in immunization, the government still needs to be able to finish to apply the third dose of the immunizing agent in the eligible population. At the moment, 10 million people are able to receive the vaccines, but they have not yet sought the health posts.
“We are evaluating the fourth dose for the population, but before that we need to finish the third dose of all eligible. We also await the Ministry of Health, but we often go beyond the Ministry of Health. We work so that the population receives the vaccine in a timely manner”, declared Regiane at a press conference this Saturday morning (5).
The Coordinator of the State Immunization Program followed the actions of the “C-Day” of vaccination against Covid-19 in children between 5 and 11 years old.
“Fourth dose is a great question in terms of scientific results”
The vice president of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI), doctor Alexandre Naime Barbosa, declared in an interview with CNN Brasil that there is still no evidence about the results of the fourth dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 for the general population and that the matter is not yet under discussion in the scientific community.
“What is being discussed is the fourth dose for the most vulnerable population. The fourth dose is not on the agenda for the general population that does not have evident immunosuppression factors”, explained Barbosa.
In addition, Alexandre Barbosa also explained that the application of the fourth dose to people who are not immunosuppressed is still a big question in terms of scientific results and that further studies are still needed to prove the need for a fourth dose of vaccine against Covid.
In December, the Ministry of Health included in the official schedule of immunization the fourth dose for immunosuppressed people.
