Genesis GV60: Everything about the new luxury Stromer from Hyundai

Hyundai announces all kinds of technical finesse for the GV60. For example, 350 kilowatts of charging current, a boost button and face recognition make you sit up and take notice.

The third electric car on the E-GMP platform from Hyundai is called the Genesis GV60. The new development comes in three versions, as was explained at the world premiere yesterday . The luxury brand is announcing various innovations that will come with the GV60. The crossover coupe should be able to be charged with up to 350 kilowatts of direct current. That would mean a charging cycle from 0 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. A maximum of 11 kilowatts are possible with alternating current. The boost button is also new. It increases the power for 10 seconds and enables an acceleration from 0 to 100 in four seconds. Many other features distinguish the GV60 from its platform partners EV6 from Kia and Ioniq 5 from Hyundai . Not only some of the 11 colors in which the luxury vehicle can be configured are new.

Motors and batteries of the Genesis GV60

The entry-level model has a rear-wheel drive with 168 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 350 Newton meters. The “small” all-wheel drive variant has a 160-kilowatt rear engine and an additional 74-kilowatt motor on the front axle. Makes a total of 234 kilowatts and 605 Newton meters of maximum torque. The manufacturer has donated two 160-kilowatt units to the GV60 Performance, which extract the same maximum torque from the 320-kilowatt system output. The new slip differential eLSD should provide an optimal distribution of the torque when steering while driving at high speed. It also offers the driver better control on slippery and wet roads. The new drift mode should primarily invite the opposite: for a sporty and dynamic driving experience.

Battery: preconditioned and with better recuperation

All models have a 77.4 kilowatt hour battery, which is 451 kilometers for the base model and 451 kilometers for the all-wheel drive 400 and 368 kilometers of range per charge for performance. Like all E-GMP vehicles, the GV60 also relies on an 800-volt charging network that can pretend it can only handle 400 volts. The preconditioning of the battery is new. The system optionally prepares the energy storage system for the charging process, using the location system for fast charging stations, among other things. The new energy recovery component called “Smart Regeneration System 2.0” evaluates traffic and map data for optimal recuperation. The iPedal mode can help with one-pedal driving: the driver can then activate different braking intensities using paddle shifters. Like all E-GMP variants, the GV60 can charge devices and vehicles with up to 3.6 kilowatts (vehicle-to-load, v2l).

Biometric incoming inspection with two factors

Genesis has hidden a camera in the B-pillar that scans the driver’s face. If there is a match with one of the two storable profiles, the vehicle opens. Genesis calls the system, which is based on infrared cameras, Face Connect. Individual settings of the head-up display, the steering wheel, the side mirrors and the infortainment system can be linked to the profiles. To be on the safe side, you have to log in again via a fingerprint sensor in the center console if you want to drive off with the GV60. Alternatively, you can use the supplied key rings: Genesis has created two design pieces, one of which is dark and one light. In addition, one of three digital keys offers admission at the touch of a button.

“Magic” control element: The Crystal Sphere Shifter

In the interior, the crystal ball peeking out on the center console is immediately noticeable. If you press the start button to start, the ball rotates and turns into a switching element. At the same time, the driver and the driver know that the engine is now running and that we can start.

“Floating” center console

The center console itself is designed to look like it is floating. This not only looks futuristic, but also has the practical side effect that something can be passed on underneath, something from the back of the car. Genesis has transformed the glove compartment into a drawer that offers plenty of space and a flat bottom so that everything does not fall apart when you close it let accentuate. The first testers state that “every surface, no matter how insignificant, is permeated by design”. This type of craftsmanship is otherwise only reserved for luxury cars, such as those made by Bentley. This is hardly surprising: The head of design at Genesis, Sangyup Lee and the head of creative Luc Donckervolke both come from the VW luxury subsidiary.

The electric Active Sound Design (e-ASD) is also new on the market. It offers various virtual driving noises that vary depending on the driving mode, speed and accelerator pedal position. The customer: in can currently choose between three sounds: “Futuristic”; “G-Engine”, which is based on engine noises, and “E-Motor”, which “reinterprets” the vehicle’s engine noises. Detailed settings for volume and pedal reaction help to adjust the sounds. Inside, a Bang & Olufsen system with 17 speakers provides premium sound.
