Fire crews did find “heavy black smoke” coming from the door when they arrived minutes later, according to an Ottawa Fire Services news release, but no one was found inside when they searched the south Ottawa home. Firefighters did encounter “high heat conditions in the basement and zero visibility from the large amount of smoke,” and the adjoining units were evacuated.
The fire was under control within 30 minutes, OFS reported, and was contained to the basement, with no another units impacted. A fire investigator has been sent to the scene to determine the cause.
One woman, located outside the home, was seen by paramedics. She was treated for minor smoke inhalation, according to the Ottawa Paramedic Service, and taken to The Ottawa Hospital in stable condition.
