CANCER Lung is the most common type of cancer in the world. There are more deaths from lung cancer each year, compared to the total number of deaths from breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
Based on data from the Global Burden of Cancer Study (Globocan) 2020, 34,783 people in Indonesia were diagnosed with lung cancer, with a mortality rate of 30,483. This figure could increase by 43 percent and reach 43,900 cases of death in 2030 if there is no improvement in the diagnosis and management of lung cancer.
Therefore, said the Secretary General of the Indonesian Oncology Association (POI) dr. Evlina Suzanna, Sp. PA. said, early detection is very important to improve the outcome of lung cancer management.
“Early detection is very important to improve the results of lung cancer management. This process cannot be separated from the quality of a comprehensive diagnosis and examination by professional medical personnel,” said Evlina as reported by Antara.
He said, with the introduction of precision medicine targeting ALK tumors and EGFR positive in lung cancer, there is hope to see an improvement in patient survival without any worsening of the cancer itself.
After diagnosis, the 5-year survival rate in lung cancer patients is low, less than 20 percent based on World Health Organization (WHO) data.
This is largely due to the absence of screening and the fact that two-thirds of new patients consult a doctor with a localized malignant condition or have already metastasized, so that the condition already incurable before being diagnosed.
