The world champion, accused of seven rapes, was released on bail this Friday after a hearing in Manchester.

The fourth bail request was the right one for Benjamin Mendy. Judge Patrick Thompson decided during a hearing before the Crown Court of Chester (north-west of England) to release and place under judicial control the French footballer. Placed in pre-trial detention since the end of August in England on account of seven counts of rape on four women and one count of sexual assault on a fifth, on facts that occurred between October 2020 and August 2021, the champion of the world 2018 (27 years old) who plays in Manchester City saw his request be accepted this Friday afternoon.

Arrest warrant issued against him if he does not appear for the hearing on January 24

The latter will be subject to conditions “strict” (stay at home, do not come into contact with the complainants) and will have to appear again in Chester on January 24, a sequence in which the former Mona player co and OM, via his lawyers, will reveal whether he pleads guilty or not. He was warned that an arrest warrant would be issued against him if he did not appear. His trial is scheduled for June 27 or August 1.

As a reminder, the affair started at the end of August when the Manchester City club announced the player’s suspension without further explanation. English justice then quickly announced that the player had been placed in pre-trial detention after being accused of four rapes – including one committed a few days earlier, while he was on parole – and a sexual assault, by three women including a minor. These first facts would have taken place at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire. For the past few days, Benjamin Mendy has been one of the 750 individuals imprisoned at HM Prison in Manchester. A high-security facility better known in England as Strangeways, a name dropped after a series of historic riots in 1990 rocked the country. This Friday evening, he will return to his home.
