The President of Greece died on Sunday in 2005-15 Karolos Papoulias – the office of President Katerina Sakellaropoulou reported. A politician who fought in the resistance during the Second World War and then opposed the so-called to the rule of the colonels, he passed away at the age of 92.
“Participation in the national resistance movement and the fight against the dictatorship prove that his commitment to the ideals of freedom and justice was unwavering and that he constantly fought for them,” wrote Sakellaropoulou in a commemorative statement. )
Active in the center-left Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), a close associate of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, Karolos Papoulias was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs before assuming the highest office in the country (1985-1989 and 1993-1996 in the rule of Andreas Papandreou) and deputy minister of national defense (1989-1990 in the office of Xenophon Zolotas). As the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he actively contributed to the accession of Cyprus to the European Union.
He graduated from the Faculty of Law at the National University of . Kapodistrias in Athens and at the University of Milan; obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Cologne. From 1963 he practiced as a lawyer , he also collaborated with the scientific institute in Munich dealing with European issues Southeast. During the dictatorship of the black colonels (1967–1974) he was in exile, he also collaborated with the Greek editorial office of the Deutsche Welle radio station. In 1974 he joined the central committee of the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement, and from 1975 to 1985 he was PASOK’s secretary for international affairs.
In his youth he trained handball – he was part of the national team. He was also the Greek champion in pole vault. (PAP)
