Marcus Rashford: Manchester United forward returns to full training

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford took part in full training on Friday for the first time since having shoulder surgery.

The 23-year-old England international has not played since coming on as a substitute in July’s Euro 2020 final.

He had been troubled by the shoulder problem for months and had an operation at the start of August.

“Marcus trained fully for the first time today with contact,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“There were a few tackles flying in on him but he seemed OK, which was nice to see.”

Speaking at a news conference before Saturday’s Premier League match against Everton at Old Trafford (12:30 BST), Solskjaer criticised the scheduling of matches.

United beat Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night but will play again less than 72 hours later, while Manchester City and Liverpool, who both played in Europe on Tuesday, meet in the league on Sunday.

“We had no explanation, but it’s TV of course,” Solskjaer said. “There’s no common sense at all. We had the same scenario last season when we were in Turkey and came back and played.

“Us and Chelsea both played on Wednesday and could have easily played on Sunday while City-Liverpool could have been on Saturday.

“Common sense might not be so common.”

‘Van de Beek not frozen out’

Solskjaer has said Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek has not been “frozen out” despite starting just two games so far this season.

Van de Beek, who joined from Ajax for £35m in September 2020, has started just four Premier League games in that time and played only six minutes in the competition so far this season.

He was an unused substitute as United beat Villarreal on Wednesday night and was caught on camera throwing his chewing gum to the floor.

“I understand the frustration, of course, every player is keen to play,” said Solskjaer.

“It’s not just Donny, it’s all of the players. I’ve got a squad of internationals and if we’re going to be successful together we know we need positive energy, we can’t have energy-sappers or sulkers.

“But Donny has never affected his team mates negatively, just so that’s said.”

He added: “He knows he’s not frozen out, It’s Manchester United. When you’re a headline player and you’re not playing, it’s always going to make headlines, but I’ve got plenty of them every week who don’t play.

“I don’t have any issues with Donny at all. He knows what he needs to work on and he is diligent in his work. He’s never let his mood affect his team-mates negatively.”
