In recognition of her unique contribution to world film, Márta Mészáros will receive the European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 34th European Film Awards Ceremony on 11 December in Berlin. The MUBI international streaming platform pays tribute to the director with important films from the Hungarian director’s oeuvre.
Through her brave and innovative films, Márta Mészáros committed independent women and complex female personalities, according to a communication from the European Film Academy to MTI on Thursday.
The European Film Academy proudly recognizes Márta Mészáros, one of the most significant female directors of all time, with her oeuvre prize. For the first time in its 34-year existence, the organization recognizes a Central and Eastern European director with a Lifetime Achievement Award. On the occasion of the award and in cooperation with the European Film Academy, MUBI will present the outstanding works of Márta Mészáros’ oeuvre from mid-November.
The director will be the guest of honor at the 34th European Film Awards in Berlin on 11 December – the ceremony will be followed live on europeanfilmawards.eu
In a statement sent to the MTI by the National Film Institute on Thursday, Csaba Káel, the government commissioner responsible for the development of the motion picture industry, is quoted as the president of the National Film Institute. “Congratulations to the European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award and I wish Márta Mészáros good health! It is a great pleasure to see the first Hungarian name on the list of Lifetime Achievement Award winners this special year, when we are celebrating the 120th anniversary of Hungarian film,” the government commissioner said.
As you pointed out, 11 of Márta Mészáros’s films have recently been renewed within the framework of the National Film Digitization and Film Restoration Program, thanks to the work of the Film Archive and the Film Laboratory.
“New generations can get to know films, which are exceptional age documents, which is why we have to preserve and pass them on,” stressed Csaba Káel.
