Everyone has to work for democracy and every day, it is not a matter of course, Merkel stated
Attacks on democracy
According to her, democracy is constantly under threat, as shown by the attacks in Halle, Hanau or the recent murder of a gas station employee in Idar-Oberstein in connection with a coronavirus pandemic. “These attacks must be rejected by everyone, because they will result in violence too quickly,” the chancellor said. Everyone has to work for democracy, and every day is not a matter of course, Merkel said, according to which its gains are sometimes treated too lightly. We are currently witnessing increasing attacks on one of them, which is media freedom. Lies and misinformation provoke public resistance and hatred. “They are attacking democracy,” Merkel said, saying social cohesion was being put to the test
Pandemic and restrictions on freedom
The chancellor also mentioned in her speech a coronavirus pandemic and its associated limitations. “Just in 2020, 30 years after reunification, it was extremely difficult for me to restrict my freedoms. It was one of the most difficult decisions of my term,” she said. The central celebrations of German reunification began with an ecumenical service at the Evangelical Church in Halle and continued with speeches by the highest constitutional officials and representatives of the Länder. In the evening, there will be a multimedia and drone show, which will replace the traditional fireworks. Due to the pandemic, the celebrations have a very limited program this year as well.
