Oda has been setting up the scene for the final battles in Onigashima for a while now. The scans of the most recent chapter, chapter 1038, reveal one of the most awaited face-offs – Big Mom vs. Kid and Law. But that’s just the final act.
We get some Scabbard action in this chapter, following the scene where Franky is looking for Zoro in the Skull Dome. Nobody was expecting this, but Izo is matched up with CP0. We were all focused on Raizo vs. Fukurokujo, but Oda doesn’t fail to surprise.
CP0 vs. Izo: Will Izo survive?
Izo will not die because of his confrontation with the CP0. In chapter 1038, Izo stops 2 Cipher Pol Aigis Zero agents, setting up some kind of future battle with them.
Even though it’s a 1v2, I’m not that worried about the former Whitebeard commander and vassal of Kozuki Oden.
None of the 9 Red Scabbards have died, and Izo, being a former Whitebeard commander, will be just fine. In my previous One Piece article, I discussed how Izo is at least as powerful as Inuarashi and Nekomamushi without their Sulong forms.
He’s fought a number of really strong characters, and that’s not counting his time as part of the Whitebeard Pirates’ crew. He helped the Scabbards go up against Kaido when Kanjuro betrayed them. He saved Usopp, Kiku, and Kinemon.
CP0, on the other hand, fodderized X Drake, who was a former member of the Tobi Roppo. The Scabbards are way stronger than the Flying Six – Izo, especially; even his bounty is greater than the higher end of the Tobi Roppo.
The problem here is that there are 2 CP0 agents, and Izo is injured. In the chapter, he has just defeated a bunch of Kaido’s subordinates and has a gaping wound in his abdomen when he sees the CP0.
There are three possibilities here:
- Izo takes on both the agents and is defeated, but survives.
- One of the agents is taken on by Marco, who comes in just in time to help Izo.
- Izo doesn’t fight with them at all.
We’re not sure at this point whether these CP0 agents are the same ones who are chasing Robin and Brook.
But narratively speaking, we originally thought CP0 was the foil to Robin, but then they ran into Scratchmen Apoo and X Drake.
There’s a chance that Izo becomes another Drake for CP0 in their search for Robin, but I don’t think Oda would introduce this meeting for nothing at such a critical point in the arc.
There’s a possibility that Marco or Denjiro come to help Izo fight off the CP0. But there’s a stronger chance that Izo strikes up some kind of bargain with the CP0.
First of all, he was the one to apprehend the agents, even though he was injured. In his state, there’s no way he would do that if he didn’t already have something in mind.
The CP0 boss says, “I am going to pretend I didn’t see you […] we have to focus on the Straw Hat Pirates.” Izo considers this but raises he gun, saying, “No, wait, CP0 …”
Izo might sell the Alliance out in exchange for medical services for his sister, Kiku. I have a feeling that this might also have something to do with the Ancient Weapons.
The CP0 are the strongest unit of the Cipher Pol operating directly under the Nobles. It’s evident that they have a particular goal.
Additionally, they’re chasing after Robin, the only known person to know the location for Pluton. We also know that Blackbeard is set on the quest to get Pluton before the World Government.
So, maybe Izo knows this, and is creating a ruse to get them to drop off Robin’s trail.
Well, whatever the reason that Izo stops the agents, I honestly can’t wait to see how Izo vs. CP0 pans out.
