Poland has one of the highest Covid-19 death rates in Europe. A visit to Czarny Dunajec shows why this is so, where the vaccination rate is only 23 percent.
Berlin Teresa Pirsich, a petite woman in a white smock, hurries across the hallway, at the end of which stands a man without a mask: “Get out!” Door. Pirsich is the village doctor in Czarny Dunajec and the health center is the only place where the residents cannot ignore the virus. “The situation is dramatic,” says Pirsich, as she disappears behind the pile of files in the treatment room. “The virus is everywhere here!” She says, looking around. A patient had just been there who tested positive. She jerks her mask nervously and pours the pungent and at the same time soothing smelling disinfectant into her palms again. It can hardly protect it. So it is probably only a question of time before she will also get sick.
