Patpong Museum to recall Thailand’s fabled ‘Prostitute Cemetery’ for Halloween

An abandoned brothel in Kanchanaburi is the inspiration for the Patpong Museum to transform itself into a haunted house for Halloween.

Next week, the museum will host Prostitution Cemetery, a haunted house-themed event inspired by the brothel where many sex workers were held captive, beaten, forced to have abortions, and murdered.

Performing arts students from Srinakharinwirot University will play ghosts for the event. Guests can also play a few games to win a medal.

Halloween Bangkok: Where to party sexy, scary, or silly

The museum has partnered with a condom brand for the event. It says that it wants to raise awareness about safe sex and the problems faced by commercial sex workers that go ignored by the authorities.

According the a folk tale, there was a place called “Brothel 35” in Kanchanaburi’s Ta Muang district where poverty-stricken women were tricked and forced to have sex with men. Some were also physically harassed and forced to have abortions. Some were left to die. With locals claiming to hear noises of women screaming or babies crying at the venue, radio and televisions played it as a ghost story and nicknamed the brothel “prostitution cemetery.”

Tickets are THB250 and available online. Attendees must be 18 and up.

Prostitute Cemetery will run noon to 9pm on Monday, Nov. 5 and Nov. 6 at the Patpong Museum.
