Italian skier Sofia Goggia has pulled a cruciate ligament and fractured a fibula after a fall during the super-G for the World Cup on Sunday Cortina d’Ampezzo. As a result, participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics has suddenly been jeopardized. Goggia won gold four years ago in the downhill at the Games in Pyeongchang.
The 29-year-old Goggia was immediately examined in the hospital after the fall and was shocked by the outcome. “I will start physiotherapy for the next few hours, because I want to try to defend my Olympic title in the discipline I love most,” she stated.
Goggia dominates the downhill this season; she won four. On the super-G she was twice the best. The descent is on the Olympic program on February 15.
