George Russell hopes that the progress of Mercedes F1 glimpsed in Mexico will be confirmed during the last two races of the season. On the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, his team was clearly ahead of Ferrari, but it is not yet certain that this is the case in Interlagos and Abu Dhabi.
“I like to think that we slightly exceeded them” said Russell. “When you look at the performance, Mexico was really solid. We had the same car for Austin and Mexico and the performance was quite different between the two. So Brazil will be interesting to see where we are there.”
The Englishman communicated a lot about the strategy in Mexico, but he assures that there was no resentment towards his team when he questioned the tactical decisions of his engineers and strategists.
“I don’t think there was any frustration as such. You’re just trying to get your point across, and when you’re on track it’s physically demanding, there’s a lot going on and you’re fighting with the car.”
“I was trying to get my message across. I felt good in the mediums, the pace seemed good. Before Lewis pitted I was closing the gap , and when I was in the lead, I was setting personal bests.”
“It’s so easy, in hindsight, and maybe we should have recognized that there was no way I could pass Checo on the hard tyre. The only solution would have been to put the soft tire.”
