Russia declares war on YouTube

The video-sharing channel has blocked a German-language Russian channel, and Russia now mentions a media war, threatening Google and Germany at the same time.

Russia does not maintain good relations with Western tech companies, the state leadership recently brewed a pile of VPN providers as well as Google and Apple before the parliamentary elections forced them to remove an opposition app from their digital stores. Strengthened after a vote without foreign observers to bring the country to a landslide victory over Vladimir Putin’s party for more than 20 years, the government can now launch another offensive, once again targeting Google, including YouTube. The video splitter pulled the match by disabling the German branch of the state-funded Russian news channel Russia Today (RT), RT Germany. In the first round, the channel received a week of blocking due to corona virus-related spoofing, which it tried to circumvent by uploading its contents to a secondary channel (Der Fehlende Part – The Missing Part). In doing so, he violated YouTube’s Terms of Use, which ultimately resulted in a permanent ban on RT Germany. At least this video-sharing position, the Russian media authority Roszkomnadzor, on the other hand, hints at the German government in the background of the action, so it threatened YouTube that if it did not allow RT Germany, it could penalize the company or even block the service altogether. Russia with a population of 140 million As for holding the Germans accountable, Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of Russia Today , posted on Twitter that, in his view, Germany had declared a “real media war” against the Russians, and therefore called on Russian regulators to ban German media from their homeland. And there are indications that the government may be receptive to the idea of a counterattack, as at the request of Radio Free Europe the Russian Foreign Ministry commented in a militant tone:

“Given the nature of the incident, which is fully in line with the logic of the information campaign against Russia, it is not only appropriate but even necessary to take equally retaliatory measures against the German media operating in Russia.”

The German government, meanwhile, denies that it had played any role in banning RT Germany, but the situation could seriously deteriorate, as YouTube has maintained its decision for the time being.
