How many ways can you riff on quilting? Serious quilters would say the options are endless, but there are limitations when it comes to a designer’s specific aesthetic. Sea’s Monica Paolini and Sean Monahan have become a resource for quilted coats, circle skirts, and even T-shirts, usually in pastel hues and voluminous silhouettes. Just when you might’ve expected them to grow tired of quilting, they came up with a clever new technique for spring 2022: spiral quilting, in which circles of fabric are twisted and linked together, resembling little candies. The spirals appear here on a crop top and pencil skirt, and in the brand’s Canal Street HQ, Paolini pointed out how the skirt’s lining could be easily removed. You could wear it over briefs, leggings, slips, and so on, making it more of a styling piece—akin to a chainmail top, but in pastel cotton.
Quilted vests and padded jackets echoed the skirt’s Neapolitan color scheme, while cotton blouses and dresses came with squares of quilting on the sleeves. All of that sweetness was undercut by a group of newly sensual pieces, like flowery dresses that are completely open in the back; knotted blouses with large cut-outs at the sternum; briefs and bras hand-crocheted in geometric motifs; and a no-frills ivory denim tank dress that dipped below the ribcage. Sea customers love a pretty print and mega volume, but that dress looked like a sleeper hit—one you could layer over ruffled blouses or wear by itself on sweltering July afternoons.
