Secret Service agents guarding Biden’s granddaughter open fire on car thieves in Georgetown

The Secret Service said agents assigned to protect President Biden’s oldest granddaughter shot at a group of car thieves in Georgetown late Sunday.

Authorities said the federal agents, who work security detail for Naomi Biden, saw a trio of suspects breaking into an unoccupied and unmarked Secret Service SUV shortly before midnight.

One of the agents shot at the suspects, authorities said, but no one was hit by the gunfire.

“The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle, and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.

The Secret Service said it’s investigating the incident with D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department.

Ms. Biden wasn’t with the agents at the time of the incident, authorities said.

ABC News reported she was made aware of the attempted break-in after the fact.

Ms. Biden is the daughter of Hunter Biden and his first wife, Kathleen Buhle. She lives in the District of Columbia with her husband, Peter Neal, and works at the law firm Arnold & Porter.

Washington’s political class has been victimized by D.C.’s yearlong crime wave that’s produced spikes in shootings, robberies and carjackings.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, Texas Democrat, was carjacked by three masked gunmen last month a mile away from the U.S. Capitol. The congressman was unharmed, and his vehicle was recovered a short time later.

A staffer for Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, was stabbed multiple times in March by a man just released from a lengthy prison stint.

Rep. Angie Craig, Minnesota Democrat, was assaulted in her apartment building in February by a man who had 12 prior convictions.

Kendrid Hamlin pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms. Craig in June. Prosecutors are seeking to put him behind bars for 39 months.

This year, homicides are up 32% in D.C., with robberies up 68% and carjackings up 104%, Metropolitan Police said. Violent crime overall is up 39% in 2023.
