Seven new Geelong Covid cases; construction support revealed

Geelong’s Covid numbers again jumped on Saturday with seven new cases, while Colac recorded five new cases. It came as a rescue package was revealed to help the region’s construction businesses.

Geelong has recorded another seven cases of Covid-19, with further cases tallied in nearby areas on a record breaking day for Victoria.

Victorian Covid Commander Jeroen Weimar on Saturday morning announced the state had tallied a grim record of 1488 new cases of Covid-19, with the 71 new regional cases including seven in Geelong, five in Colac and one in each of the Surf Coast, Warrnambool and Corangamite.

“In Geelong we have seven cases, five of which are linked and are well understood, mainly primary close contacts, two cases in one household that we’re doing more investigative work on over the course of today,” Mr Weimar said.

“In Colac we have five cases. Some of those are associated with the Australian Lamb Company meat works, three of those cases, and two related cases.

“However can I just stress, with my huge thanks to the Australian Lamb Company for their fantastic work over a long year in terms of improving Covid-safe protocols and supporting their workforce to get vaccinated. We’re seeing very high levels of vaccination among their workforce.

“Although we’re testing all their workforce and the site is currently closed, we don’t have any evidence yet of transmission at the site. What we’ve seen is social gatherings again, dare I say Grand Final parties, which have caused the spread of those five cases so far in Colac.

“Also in the Barwon area we have a case in Corangamite, another case in the Surf Coast, and another case in Warrnambool, all isolated.”

The state’s record-breaking day for new Covid-19 cases brought it to 11,591 active cases, the most since the beginning of the pandemic. A record 71,224 tests were also received by authorities on Friday.

Victorian Government support for construction businesses

Geelong and Surf Coast construction businesses will be eligible for a $200m State Government package of cash grants, supporting those hit hardest by lockdown restrictions.

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas on Saturday announced the $196.6m support package, providing one-off payments to eligible businesses, including sole traders, to cover the two-week restriction period from September 21 to October 4.

More than 70,000 construction businesses will be eligible for the Business Costs Assistance Program Round Four – Construction grants, including regional businesses in the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and Mitchell Shire.

Eligible non-employing sole trader businesses will receive a one-off payment of $2000, increasing to $2800 for businesses with an annual payroll of up to $650,000, $5600 for a payroll of $650,000 to $3m and $8400 for a payroll of $3m-$10m.

Mr Pallas took a swipe at the Federal Government while announcing the support package, labelling its move not to co-fund the package, despite having done so in New South Wales, and “act of churlishness … and small-mindedness” and “blatant favourable treatment of NSW”.

“We are very, very unhappy that the Commonwealth Government broke with its practice of co-founding business support packages in Victoria, and refused to contribute to this industry,” Mr Pallas said.

“The Victorian Government will go it alone with construction industry support and give businesses the help they need to get back on their feet as our state moves along our road map to reopening.

“It’s up to Josh Frydenberg and the Prime Minister to explain why construction businesses in Victoria have been treated differently to those in NSW.”

Mr Pallas said the grants would have been doubled had the federal government co-funded the package.

Applications for the package will open in mid-October.

To be eligible, businesses must be registered under a relevant construction sector ANZSIC codes, have a Victorian payroll of less than $10m a year, have incurred direct costs due to restrictions, and be registered for GST.

Businesses must have not previously received support under the Business Cost Assistance Program or the Small Business Covid Hardship Fund.

Guidelines will be published at business.vic.gov.au next week – businesses can register for email notification ahead of this.
