U.S. National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan issued the following statement on the passage of Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations for the agency:
The U.S. National Science Foundation has a long history of advancing the frontiers of research through exploration and innovation, making the U.S. a world leader in science and engineering. NSF has produced numerous breakthroughs that have had incredible benefits for the American people. We are grateful for the continued strong support from the Administration and Congress. With the passage of the Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations, NSF will continue to invest in science and engineering research and create new partnerships to keep America competitive, while breaking down barriers to participation in STEM.

Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
