In the headquarters of the largest opposition party in Albania, violent riots broke out between rival groups. Protesters stormed the building’s ground floor on Saturday, smashed windows and broke open the main gate.
People in the party headquarters tried to drive away the intruders with tear gas. At least one injured person was seen.
The chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, had the former party leader in September Sali Berisha expelled from the parliamentary group. This accuses Basha of having made himself hostage to the socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama. Berisha formed a party grouping that requested a ballot in December to overthrow Basha. However, party bodies refused.
The US government has accused Berisha of corruption during his tenure from 2005 to 2013 to have been involved and to have interfered in an investigation.
