The bastard children of February 4

Some Venezuelans in 1992 ventured to give their approval to the attempted coup of February 4, the attempt was a failure, although it turned out to be a success in the political field for Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez, who before that event was totally unknown, but cleverly manipulated the situation in his favor, presenting himself to the country as the leader of the insurgents and gaining notoriety he wanted to come to power. This week marks the 30th anniversary of that infamous event that changed the course of our history and which shot directly into the heart of our democracy.

The truth is that in the Venezuela of In 1992 there were notable cracks, there was a social unrest that was increasing and that had its origin in the black Friday of 1983, when the bolivar suffered a strong devaluation against the dollar, from then on the situation went from bad to worse. During the second government of Carlos Andrés Pérez, many people were disillusioned with the traditional political system and naively believed that the military could develop the country, based on the economic prosperity and modernization of the nation during the dictatorship of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez.

Democracy was underestimated in those years in which a large part of Venezuelans longed for a change without thinking about the consequences. The February 4 coup plotters went to jail for their actions, but the case was later dismissed by the democratically elected president Rafael Caldera, who opened Pandora’s box, which left the way clear for Hugo Chávez to present himself to the 1998 elections in which he was the winner, he did not relinquish power until his death. The coup of February 4 caused the death of dozens of people, but instead of paying for their actions, the guilty were rewarded.

The saying goes that “no one knows what they have until they lose”, nothing better illustrates the feelings of Venezuelans who from the beginning supported Chavez and now lament the situation in Venezuela, they did not value democracy until they lost it. Unfortunately, and thanks to those who underestimated our institutions, the insurgents managed to govern the country as they pleased and manage our resources for their own benefit.

The current situation in Venezuela is totally worse than the of 1992. Not only the economy is completely destroyed, but also the morality of thousands of compatriots. Chavismo has dismantled our society. A large number of young people born during the government of Chávez and Maduro have only one reference: a failed state.

Chávez handed over weapons in the Venezuelan neighborhoods, supposedly to provide the people with instruments with which that they could defend “the revolution” in the event of a coup. The truth is that violence and crime have increased since then, to the point of overflowing with Maduro, ours is one of the bloodiest and most dangerous territories in the world. Several of those who were born in this context have only known a model of society in which a gun is synonymous with more status than a profession or a job, they are the “children” of a corrupt government in which drug trafficking exercises control.

Most of the antisocials, which are currently developing in our country, are the result of bringing to power a group of criminals who murdered democracy, and who were permeating with hatred and anti-values to a whole generation. Many of these boys have no chance of study or social reintegration and are being lost, they are unrecognized “children” of the national drift that began with the events perpetuated in 1992, they are the bastard “children” of that coup of 4 February, which marks three decades this Friday.
