The mountains without the white mantle, with the melting glaciers, mean scarcity of water. And loss of biodiversity. The UN water report of 2021 estimates that over two billion people in the world live in countries with water supply problems. Four billion people live in areas that suffer from severe water shortages at least one month a year. And while rivers and lakes are suffering, because the storage capacity of water in reservoirs is reduced by 1% every year, the use of drinking water has continued to grow by 1% a year since 1980. It cannot be wait longer: we must do everything possible to preserve the precious water reserves of the mountains, but we must also reduce consumption. Edited by Cristina Nadotti
