The Quarry is worth a look for Until Dawn fans

A cinematic horror adventure from Supermassive Games with teens and supernatural scares

My favorite part of any Supermassive horror-adventure story is seeing which actors are on board. My second favorite part is trying to keep them — well, most of them — alive. After yesterday’s tease, the studio behind Until Dawn (and The Dark Pictures Anthology) lifted the lid on The Quarry — a “teen-horror narrative game” with plenty of familiar faces.

The story revolves around an extended cast of camp counselors, and Until Dawn director Will Byles is spearheading The Quarry, which will be reassuring news for fans of the PS4’s mountain-lodge teen nightmare. I always liked the way that game playfully leaned into and then subverted certain tropes, but that can be a tricky balance to pull off.

The summary from Supermassive and 2K also sounds super familiar in a good way.

“Hunted by blood-drenched locals and something far more sinister, the teens’ party plans unravel into an unpredictable night of horror. Friendly banter and flirtations give way to life-or-death decisions, as relationships build or break under the strain of unimaginable choices.”

“Play as each of the nine camp counselors in a thrilling cinematic tale, where every choice shapes your unique story from a tangled web of possibilities. Any character can be the star of the show — or die before daylight comes.”

If you look closely at the screenshot up top, you might notice a missing hand.

In terms of the core cast, you can see little profiles for everyone on the game’s official site. We’ve got David Arquette as the camp owner, Ted Raimi as the small-town sheriff, and nine counselors ranging from Justice Smith to Brenda Song to Miles Robbins. I’m also stoked to see fan faves like Lance Henriksen, Lin Shaye, and Grace Zabriskie on the list.

Couch co-op is back, so you’ll be able to divvy up control of the characters, and there’s online multiplayer, in which up to seven “invited players” can “watch along and vote on key decisions.” The Quarry also has a Movie Mode that turns it into a “cinematic thriller.”

The Quarry will launch on June 10, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The price point — $60 on PS4 and Xbox One, $70 on PS5 and Series X/S — is going to be a tough sell for a wide audience, but if all goes well, this game will be able to build up an audience over time like Until Dawn. High expectations, for sure. I’m hoping for the best.

These silly yet spooky “movie night” adventures are a blast with the right group, and I’m glad Supermassive can keep making them. That goes for The Dark Pictures Anthology, too.
