‘The rematch the world has wanted to see’: Taylor-Serrano II confirmed for July

Katie Taylor will rematch multiple-weight world champion Amanda Serrano on the undercard of the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul bout in Dallas this summer, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The bout, which comes more than two years after Taylor defeated Serrano by split decision in Madison Square Garden in the biggest women’s boxing match in history, will be held at the AT&T in Arlington, Texas — the home of NFL outfit the Dallas Cowboys. This contest will once again represent a high water mark for an all-female clash, given that the attendance is expected to be in the region of 80,000.

Taylor’s undisputed lightweight titles will be on the line, while Serrano moves up three divisions from featherweight for the bout.

The July 20 card will be streamed live on Netflix, in a move which will likely draw one of the largest audiences for a combat sports spectacle given the streaming platform’s move into broadcasting live sports.

The confirmation of the fight also means that Taylor’s third fight with Chantelle Cameron — the only woman to have defeated Taylor in professional competition — will have to wait.

“This is the rematch the world has wanted to see, and I’m delighted that it’s finally happening,” Taylor said in a statement. “The first fight in New York was obviously an epic occasion and it more than lived up to the billing, and I’m sure the rematch will be no different.”

Serrano, meanwhile, pledged to become the first fighter to score a finish of the Irish fighter when they square off for the second time.

“I promised my fans they would see this rematch after we made history at MSG and it feels like a dream come true to know that Katie and I are finally making it happen on the biggest stage possible to show the world what elite women’s boxing is all about,” she said. “I believe I won our first fight, but I didn’t get the decision, so this time I’m not leaving it to the judges.”
