Weather warnings have been put in place with heavy snowfall and icy rain set to hit the UK.

These warnings are in place as more areas fall under weather warnings.

Experts have warned that the cold weather will continue into the new week, with a blast of ‘Arctic air’ expected.

According to the Met Office, a yellow snow and ice warning has been placed in areas including North West, North East, the Midlands and most of Wales.

This Met Office, this weather warning has been extended to the evening of January 5 as further sleet, rain and snow is expected to hit other parts of the UK.

Meteorologist John Hammond told Sky News that the unsettled weather has gone “according to plan” in terms of how experts had foreseen it.

“There’s a lot of heavier snow still falling across parts of northern England, up into southern Scotland, fringing into Northern Ireland as well,” he says, adding that there is still possibly 30cm of snow to come tonight.

“By contrast, further south, although we saw snow earlier on in the day, that has rapidly turned to rain and the thaw has set in with a vengeance in some places.”

A yellow rain warning for Scotland and across the South of England will not expire until the morning of January 6.

This will mean there is a potential for travel to be disrupted as conditions make it dangerous with a potential of localised surface water flooding.

Among the worst-hit areas, the Pennines will experience the brunt of this weather with predictions of between 15-30 cm of snow forecasted for Wales and the Peak District.

He added: “We’re going to see some remarkably low temperatures at night.
