The media office of the international forces operating in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) issued a strongly worded statement yesterday after a new clash occurred between elements of these forces and residents in the Bint Jbeil area in the south.
The Deputy Director of the Media Office, Candice Ardell, described what the soldiers were subjected to as “an assault on them while carrying out their work, which falls within the violations of Lebanese and international law.”
Ardel called on the Lebanese authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation and to bring to justice all those responsible for these crimes. It also condemned “the actors in southern Lebanon” and held them responsible, saying that they “manipulate the residents of the area to serve their purposes.”
This is not the first time that UNIFIL forces have been attacked. In southern Lebanon, the statement quoted its leadership as “condemning the attacks on men and women who serve the cause of peace, which are considered violations of Lebanese and international law.”
On the political level, Yesterday, a meeting was held between President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, during which a tripartite call was held with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Mikati described his meeting with Aoun as “fruitful.”
Asharq Al-Awsat learned that Aoun initiated Berri during the call between them with his desire to “open a new page” and his intention to sign a decree to open a session However, the draft issued by Aoun limited the duration of the session to only 15 days, which raised Berri’s objection, who stressed that the session should be extended to the date of the regular session next March.
Parliamentary sources indicated that Berri informed President Najib Mikati that the parliamentary petition obligating the president and the government to open the session is continuing, and it will be ready by today. …More
