Alcohol consumption was already seeing changes before the pandemic, but lockdowns drove up drinking in the first two years. People drank for various reasons, including uncertainty, loss of connection, fear of death, and political and racial tensions. Many also drank to cope with accumulated pressures that reached an apex in the summer of 2021.

According to public healthcare, the answer to this question depends on your taste for risk. In the USA, 5% of adults meet the criteria for alcohol addiction, but the effect of drinking is driven by 60% of adults.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the disorder is a medical condition where individuals have an impaired ability to control alcohol use despite adverse health consequences.

The USDA’s Dietary Guidelines recommend men drink no more than two servings and women no more than one, where 1.5 fluid ounces with 40% alcohol is considered one serving.

Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder

Various studies and reports recommend using both medication and non-drug approaches to effectively treat Alcohol Use Disorder. The Food and Drug Administration has approved three medicines to reduce drinking.
