Who are were the most popular models in every class on the Bulgarian market for new cars in 2021? We have already presented the ranking for the C-segment and now it’s the turn of the upper D-segment (or “big family cars”, as it leads them in its EuroNCAP classification), writes Automedia.bg.
Until the very recent past, this was the dominant class on the mass market – not so much as units, but as prestige. The big sedan was the dream of every average European family. But then came the crossovers and the once mighty D-segment began to shrink from year to year.
In Bulgaria, the pace of this shrinkage is even faster: if on average for the EU this class retains about 7% share, in 2021 in our country barely 4.6% (or a total of 1453 cars). On the other hand, the proportions between the individual brands are quite different from those in the smaller classes. If in the C-segment of every Golf sold there are more than five Corollas sold, in the D-segment Germany leads Japan by approximately 4 to 1. And this is without considering the market leader, which is not a German brand but part of a German
The final data for 2021 at EU level have not yet been released. In 2020, the best-selling D-segment models in Europe were the BMW 3 Series, Volkswagen Passat, Tesla Model 3, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Skoda Superb and Volvo S60 / V60. See what the ranking looks like in Bulgaria:

4. BMW 3 Series – 146
The market leader in this segment in Europe for 2020 is the fourth in Bulgaria in 2021 with 146 registrations. The most popular variant is 320d – 97 units, of which 95 are four-wheel drive – xDrive. Five BMW M3s are also included here
3. Volkswagen Arteon – 180
The more elegant cousin of the Passat is enjoying growing demand in Bulgaria and if the trend continues , next year may be ahead of its prototype.
2. Volkswagen Passat – 194
Volkswagen has long enjoyed a good reputation and demand in the Bulgarian market. Production problems caused by the shortage of chips slowed down towards the end of the year.
1. Skoda Superb – 396 registrations
The unattainable leader in the Bulgarian D-segment has practically twice as many registrations as the second in the rankings. Moreover, over 70% of all Superb sold in our country are in high levels of equipment, according to the official importer.
