Washington, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) A new winter storm could cover 70 million Americans in the eastern and central parts of the country with snow this weekend, the National Weather Service warned today.
The snow will result in reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions, specialists warned while hundreds of North Americans prepare to enjoy the first holiday of the year on Monday, in honor of the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., a fighter for civil rights.
The NBC News network predicted a fall of between 15 and 30 centimeters of snow from North Dakota to Missouri, while in the Mississippi Valley from tonight until tomorrow there may be heavy freezing rain.
Forecasters indicated that the system would move south first , to Atlanta, Georgia, and then head north on Sunday and Monday along the east coast, with strong winds and precipitation.
Some snow will fall in the main metropolitan areas of Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, but a change in rainfall will stop the accumulations, according to information s of the CNN network.
At the beginning of the year, a similar storm wreaked havoc in the eastern part of the United States, with hundreds of canceled flights, numerous vehicles stranded on highways and more than 500,000 homes were without electricity.
