The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will be without foreign fans due to coronavirus. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said today that tickets will only be sold to residents of mainland China who comply with the anti-covide-19 regulations.
All participants in the Games who will not be fully vaccinated will have 21 days of quarantine upon arrival in Beijing. After receiving information from the Chinese organizers, the IOC announced “principles to help organize the safe and successful Olympic and Paralympic Games as planned,” after today’s meeting of its Executive Board. It will publish these principles in detail in the first version of the manual, the so-called playbook, at the end of October. The second version will be published in December. The Beijing Winter Olympics will begin on February 4. Vaccinated participants of the games will not have to be isolated after arriving at the venue and will be able to move freely immediately, however in a kind of “bubble”. This will include sports facilities, accommodation and dining areas or access to the opening and closing ceremonies. ZOH participants will also have their own transport system. All will be tested daily for covid-19. Unvaccinated participants in the games will receive a three-week quarantine upon arrival, although the IOC has not ruled out exceptions. “Cases of athletes who will be able to grant a justified medical exemption will be (individually) assessed,” said Olympic officials. The IOC accepted the Chinese party’s request for the non-participation of foreign spectators with disappointment, but at least acknowledged the presence of domestic fans. The Tokyo Summer Games were held in empty stadiums due to coronavirus. “It will help the growth of winter sports in China and provide an atmosphere in sports venues,” said the IOC. China reported today that it has fully vaccinated 1.05 billion people.
