Who is currently allowed to be boosted?

The third vaccination is open to all persons aged 16 and over. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) and the Federal Commission for Vaccination (Ekif) have been recommending this since November 26th. The original condition was that the second vaccination was at least six months ago. Only then could you book an appointment in the canton of Zurich. This period has now been shortened to four months.

In the canton of Zurich, a booster vaccination is possible after four months. All people who received their basic immunization four months ago can have a boost since January 1st.

The admitted persons will be sent by SMS or letter contacted as soon as they can book an appointment. According to the health department, there should be enough appointments so that everyone who wants to be boosted can do so by February 1st.

How many free dates are there?

The demand for the booster vaccination is great. After the Zurich health department had shortened the deadline for the booster vaccination on Wednesday (December 22nd) to 5 months, people in Zurich booked a further 30,000 appointments on the same day.

In the meantime (January 7th) around 511,000 people in the canton have already received a third injection . 70 percent of those over 65 have already received a boost.

The health directorate is correspondingly satisfied. “We are on track with the booster vaccinations,” says spokesman Patrick Borer on request.

There are still free appointments in the vaccination centers and pharmacies. The Directorate of Health speaks of around 160,000 free appointments in January.

Where can I get vaccinated?

Because of the rush on the booster, the health department has the vaccination capacity en expanded. According to the health department, around 23,000 people can be vaccinated every day in January. In addition to 500 general practitioner practices and 110 pharmacies, there are numerous vaccination centers available to those willing to vaccinate: In the city of Zurich, boosts are given in Oerlikon, on Hirschengraben, in Triemli city hospital and in the vaccination tram, which is used at Bellevue and at Enge train station.

There are vaccination centers in the region in Winterthur, Affoltern am Albis, Uster, Bülach, Dietikon, Meilen, Horgen and Wetzikon. There is a drive-in center at the military airfield in Dübendorf. On January 17th, another vaccination center will open in the Glatt shopping center.

In order to cope with the expected onslaught, the vaccination centers have also extended their opening hours and are now open seven days a week.

How do I get a vaccination appointment?

The Since Monday, November 29, the Canton of Zurich has been informing all vaccinated people aged 16 and over who are registered in the cantonal vaccination tool and who can book an appointment by SMS or letter – provided that four months have passed since their last vaccination. Registration before this deadline is not yet possible.

People who are already approved for booster vaccination but have not yet booked an appointment will receive a reminder SMS in the coming days.

For vaccination in a vaccination center or in a pharmacy, the cantonal vaccination tool under zh.vacme.ch an appointment can be booked. A German-speaking vaccination hotline is available on 0848 33 66 11 daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. According to the authorities, it is currently not possible to obtain a booster vaccination without prior notification.

The vaccination hotline is also available at certain times in Albanian, Italian, Portuguese, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Spanish available. The canton has the times and numbers on a separate site. In order to avoid longer waiting times, The Directorate of Health generally recommends calling during the week in the evening from 6 p.m. or on the weekends.

How does vaccination work for children?

On December 14th, the federal government published the recommendations for vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years.

Since Monday, January 3rd, parents and legal guardians can register children between the ages of 5 and 11 for a vaccination in the canton of Zurich. It was announced that the dates for the child vaccination at 8 a.m. on zh.vacme.ch would be activated. However, the appointment bookings didn’t actually work until around 8:30 a.m., as the health department announced on their Twitter account. The reason for the delay was a technical error. The health department apologizes for the resulting waiting time via Twitter. The dates are continuously activated.

According to the health department, the children have various options for vaccination: The Children’s Hospital Zurich, the vaccination center at Hirschengraben, the Vaccination Center Winterthur and the Uster Vaccination Center will offer vaccinations for children from 5 to 11 years of age. Pediatricians will also have the opportunity to order the vaccine for children.

First, the children have to zh.vacme.ch must be registered. This should mostly be done via an email address of the legal guardian. You will then receive a code that you either need when registering for the vaccination in one of the three centers on the cantonal website or you have to give it to your family doctor. The date for the second vaccination is automatically booked 3 weeks after the first vaccination.

In the meantime (7. 1) more than 1000 children have each other get vaccinated between the ages of 5 and 11. The health department says on request that the appointments are well booked. She does not give any exact numbers.

Which vaccine is used for the booster?

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are approved, Pfizer from 16 years of age, Moderna from 18 years of age. However, the FOPH recommends that people under the age of 30 receive a booster vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine, regardless of which vaccine the person was vaccinated with first. The reason is a very rare side effect – inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) – which can occur mainly in people between the ages of 12 and 29, mostly in men. According to the Directorate of Health, the risk of myocarditis is very low overall, but with the Pfizer vaccine the risk is half as high as with a Moderna vaccination.

According to the BAG, all other people should, if possible, receive a vaccination with the vaccine that has already been administered to them. In off-label use, cross-vaccinations are sometimes also administered – for example by the family doctor.

How long is the Covid certificate valid after a booster vaccination?

After booster vaccination k a new Covid certificate can be issued for a period of twelve months. The Federal Office of Public Health is advising on a general extension of the certificate for fully vaccinated people and will provide information on this “in due course” according to its own information.
