American football players reveal sexual abuse of coach

The American women’s soccer club North Carolina Courage has immediately fired English coach Paul Riley. He is accused of sexual abuse by two former football players. “We support the players who have come forward so bravely with their story,” the NWSL professional club said on its website. Both the American Football Federation and FIFA have announced that they are investigating.

Sinead Farrelly (31) and Meleana Shim (30) disclosed the abuse by Riley in The Athletic magazine. They talked extensively about the sexual harassment that lasted more than ten years. Riley denies all allegations and told the magazine that he never had sex with the players. He used to meet them in a bar and pay for their drinks.

For the club, the allegations were enough to evict Riley. The club encouraged players and staff to come out if they have experienced inappropriate behavior. NWSL president Lisa Baird and another director of the American women’s professional league are also said to have been sent away. Earlier on Friday, Baird said she has referred the allegations to the US Center for Safe Sports for investigation. “A safe working environment is a top priority for the league,” said Baird.

The American Football Federation called the abuse stories “abhorrent and unacceptable”. Competition in the NWSL has now been suspended for the time being. Earlier, two trainers were also removed from their position for misconduct in their working relationship with football players. “Many now feel the pain. Our entire league will now have to get back together. Our players deserve much better treatment. The work culture in our league needs to change completely,” said Baird, who took the decision to postpone the games in consultation with the football players.

FIFA announced that it has launched a preliminary investigation. “When it comes to misconduct in football, we would like to reiterate that FIFA’s position is clear: anyone found guilty of misconduct and abuse in football will be brought to justice, punished and removed from the game.” according to the union in a statement.

A major gymnastics abuse scandal has already come to light in the United States thanks to testimonials from victims, including multiple Olympic and world champion Simone Biles. Larry Nassar, the former US gymnastics team doctor, was sentenced to 175 years in prison for abusing hundreds of gymnasts.
