One of New Delhi-bred singer-songwriter Varun Vasisht’s earliest memories with music is of him playing his father’s guitar. He says, “My dad would encourage me to learn more songs with the promise that I’d get a new guitar if I did.” Growing up in a household that embraced all styles of music, Vasisht grew inspired by musicians Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer. However, it was only three years ago when Vashist moved to Singapore for college that he began writing songs.

He says, “Being in a different city and going through new experiences, inspired me to write my own songs.” Some of those tracks have been released which include 2020’s “You.” and this year’s “ICY.” Now, the singer-songwriter is out with his latest poignant track called “Clouds of Rain.”

It was this past May when Vasisht woke up in the middle of the night and found himself humming what would become the hook to “Clouds of Rain.” He says, “I quickly pulled out my guitar and played a verse, and just couldn’t get the tune out of my head. The next morning, I wrote the lyrics and worked on the story.” According to the artist, the lyrics came from a feeling of dealing with the pandemic. The singer-songwriter adds, “This song is a reminder that ultimately it’s the people who matter and who make life worth living. I wanted the song to feel like a hug for those listening.”

“Clouds of Rain” opens with delicate acoustic guitar plucking and Vasisht’s impassioned vocals before we hear a piano come in and lift the track while shakers and wonderful harmonies add to the mood. Vasisht recorded the song at New Delhi’s Ferris Wheel Studios and co-produced it with Bharath Rajeevan who also played bass and piano. Ferris Wheel’s own Mukul Jain mixed and mastered the song. “He really gets my vision, and so collaborating with him is creatively satisfying,” says Vasisht.

With a bunch of music already in his locker, the singer-songwriter assures us that there’s going to be lots of releases coming up. The artist is also putting together his debut EP which will include a mix of genres that he enjoys playing. “I feel that my music has grown way beyond just singer-songwriter acoustic songs, and this EP will include more progressive sounds and beats as well,” he says.
