Timber twins enter into a fratricidal battle: 'They must win'

AjaxFC Utrecht is Sunday for the twin brothers Jurriën and Quinten Timber more than just the duel between the two clubs. For the two talented footballers, a real ‘brother battle’ is at stake. In the run-up to the squatter between Ajax and FC Utrecht, brother Shamier tells Ajax Showtime about mutual bullying and the stormy development of both players.

Quinten played for Ajax until recently, but last summer he made the switch to FC Utrecht. Thus Jurriën and Quinten will face each other for the first time on Sunday. The Timber family is especially proud that both brothers will face each other on Sunday in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Shamier explains that several tickets have been arranged for relatives and people who were close to the brothers throughout the journey. ‘I’m talking about Ajax, but also Feyenoord and DVSU (the amateur club where the brothers started, ed.).’

have breakfast together somewhere during the match’, brother Shamier continues. ‘After that we will go to the ArenA with several cars to watch the game. I think we will come to the stadium with about 25 people. They are all people who helped in the entire process.’

Sleeping in the same bedroom and then playing against each other : ‘That is unique’

The brothers Jurriën and Quinten are – when the family, friends and acquaintances look forward to the competition – already fully focused on the match. Shamier: ‘Coincidentally, we had dinner with the family last week. Then Jurriën and Quinten are already kidding each other. Jurriën had of course the focus on the Champions League match against Besiktas, although they have been fooling each other all week.’

Jurriën and Quinten both still live at home and they also sleep together in a bedroom. It would be a good question for quiz lovers: how often did it happen that two brothers slept together in the room and then played against each other? ‘I can’t imagine that has happened before, haha’, laughs Shamier. ‘It’s unique. My mother often asks how much it will be. Then Jurriën says a bit teasingly: “Of course we are going to win. They are not going to perform anything in our ArenA”. And Quinten then responds with a laugh: “We’ll see on Sunday, haha”. It just stays funny. They are brothers, twins, they feel each other. They always remain positive, but in a brotherly way. It’s just a little more than a joke, so to speak.’

There is no preference in the Timber house for Ajax or FC Utrecht, Shamier explains. “We’re for my brothers and that’s it. If Jurriën defends well, we are happy. And if Quinten scores, we are happy too. It is win-win, but also loss. If one wins, you also have mixed feelings.’

‘People also say non-stop that it seems as if Jurriën has been playing in Ajax 1 for years’

Jurriën has been able to develop stormy at Ajax in recent months. The defender definitely fought in the starting line-up, then made his Orange debut and played at the European Championships and Timber is also achieving a consistently high level this season. “People also say non-stop that it seems like he has been playing in Ajax 1 for years,” says Shamier. ‘It goes so fast that you hardly realize that it is going so well. We are incredibly proud as a family.’

When the family is together, the family realizes that what Jurriën is experiencing is very special. Jurriën’s focus is just one hundred percent. When we were together last week, we also briefly talked about Ajax – FC Utrecht. Quinten also said at the time: “Let’s not talk about that match, the focus should be on the Champions League”. Then Jurriën nods “yes, that’s right”. The focus with both boys is there for the full one hundred percent. It says a lot about these guys. That is also the strength they get from football.”

Against Besiktas in the Champions League, Timber once again played a good match in the Ajax shirt. A small blemish on his good performance was the lost duel with Besiktas player Kenan Karaman. The referee saw a violation and the goal was cancelled. Although more went wrong at Ajax in the run-up to that goal, Timber indicated after that match that the referee could also have let play continue.

‘ We’ve talked about it. It is a mistake in a game in which he played well. It is a learning moment for Jurriën. Always keep the focus and on to the next game. No, he won’t be bothered by the next match. The focus is completely there. He recognizes his mistakes, picks up and improves. That’s Jurriën.’

‘ Choice for FC Utrecht van Quinten before and after excellent’

Where Jurriën is a basic player at Ajax, that did not apply to his twin brother Quinten. Ajax wanted to continue with Quinten, the club even offered him a contract extension, but the midfielder mainly wanted to make minutes. FC Utrecht offered him that option and the sporting plan was right for that club. ‘I thought it was an excellent choice beforehand and still is afterwards’, says Shamier.

‘He is going for his sporting career. He sees that there is a chance at Ajax that he will not play in the first. FC Utrecht really wanted him and he chose that. He was also born and raised in Utrecht, it’s just his city. As a family we are very happy about that. He also does it well, so that’s very nice.’

Quinten did not have to leave Ajax, emphasizes Shamier. ‘He was able to extend his contract with Ajax and even move to major clubs in the major competitions, but he consciously chose to move to FC Utrecht. There he can play a lot, get better and develop as a footballer. It is a step that we as a family fully support. Who knows, maybe we’ll see him play at Ajax again in a few years. For now he is completely enjoying himself at FC Utrecht. He enjoys it and he can even cycle to the club. It’s just around the corner.’

That Quinten is on the right track at FC Utrecht was also apparent when he was recently allowed to train with the big Orange squad. ‘He was then told by such a legend, because that is Van Gaal, that he was the best of the Dutch Juniors and that he could therefore train with the Orange. That’s just beautiful. And then you also see a video in which Quinten says in a funny way: “Guys, I’ll see you again soon”. Like: I’m coming too. That is beautiful. Jurriën was also very happy to be able to train with his brother again.’

‘It is a complete brotherly struggle: they have to win it’

Sundays are different. Where Jurriën and Quinten were teammates for years, this time they face each other. Shamier hopes for an open match. ‘I am a neutral supporter, because you have two brothers who play against each other. At Jong FC Utrecht there is another brother, Dylan Timber. I hope for a match in which there is a lot of attacking football and that they both play a good match.’

Shamier would rather not have a draw. ‘I like a bit of a fight, haha. If one wins and the other loses, you get a bit of a fight. Then you keep the focus on it. I want someone to win and then I don’t care who’, says Shamier, who indicates that both Jurriën and Quinten will not withdraw his leg. “It’s a full-blown brotherhood. They have to win him. If someone did pull their leg back, I’d tease them too. And that would continue until the next meeting.’

For Quinten, the match against Ajax will be a special one. The question is therefore: will he cheer exuberantly if he scores against Ajax? ‘I think he has respect for Ajax. He has developed there and was made by Ajax and Feyenoord. He likes Utrecht, but because he plays in the ArenA, I think he respects it. That will be different in De Galgenwaard, but that is logical. He will deal with it calmly in the ArenA.’

The match between Ajax and FC Utrecht starts on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm and will be played in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Ajax is currently at the top of the
Eredivisie

, while FC Utrecht is in fifth place. Last season the game in Amsterdam ended in a 1-1 draw.
