Chinese telecom and electronics firm Huawei announced on Thursday that in accordance with its rotating leadership system, Guo Ping will assume the position of rotating and acting chairman of Huawei from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

Born in 1966, Guo Ping graduated from Huazhong University of Technology (now Huazhong University of Science and Technology). He joined Huawei in 1988 serving across his extensive time with the firm as R&D Project Manager, General Manager of Supply Chains, Director of Huawei Executive Office, Chief Legal Officer, President of the Business Process & IT Management Department, President of the Corporate Development Department, Chairman and President of Huawei Device, Rotating CEO of Huawei and Chairman of the FC., among other roles. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Board and Rotating Chairman of the company.

The rotating chairman is the top leader of the company during his or her tenure and presides over the Board of Directors and the Standing Committee of the Board of Directors. Huawei has three rotating chief executives who are on duty for half a year, namely Guo Ping, Xu Zhijun and Hu Houkun. Xu Zhijun served as the rotating chairman from April 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021.

In May 2020, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei talked about the role of the rotating chairman system in an interview. “First, its function is to let the company keep fresh for a long time; second, to maintain the stability of cadres; third, the period of stepping down is the rotating chairmen’s time to recharge in preparation for stepping up again. He runs all over the world and his guidance works because he is also a senior leader. Through discussions with various departments, he has a plan on how to further promote reform and make preparations after taking office. Generally, I should say the rotating system as a whole is relatively successful,” he said.
