Kate Garraway praised for showing off ‘real’ and ‘messy’ house while caring for husband Derek

Kate Garraway has been praised by fans for having a ‘real’ lived-in family home after her ‘messy’ house was revealed in a new documentary episode, Kate Garraway: Caring for Derek.

The 53-year-old presenter opened up her home to viewers this week in a film that explored her husband Derek Draper’s situation being cared for at home.

Derek, 54, returned home in April 2021 after spending a year in hospital fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus in 2020, which has since left him battling a number of ongoing health issues.

In Kate’s documentary, which aired on Tuesday 22 February, Kate, also 54, showed the realities of the work that goes into making sure Derek is comfortable and well taken care of.

The cameras panned around the entire living area of the London home that Kate and Derek share with children Darcey, 15, and William, 12.

Viewers were quick to compliment Kate’s home for being ‘real’ and ‘down to earth’ in comparison with other pristine celebrity homes.

One wrote: “Watching Caring for Derek… Not only is @kategarraway a super strong human being, but she is real. In today’s world, its so lovely to see a real ‘lived in house’…. Thank you for showing a real family home.”

While another shared: “l love her and her house as messy as mine makes her real”.

However, a third had another suggestion involving Stacey Solomon and the team from her home improvement show, Sort Your Life Out with Stacey Solomon.

“Would love to see @StaceySolomon go in with her team & sort @kategarraway house! And @DIYSOS The woman has so much on her plate and having everything in its place and a system would help her stress levels! What a tower of strength she is #CaringForDerek #CovidIsNotOver”.

Ben Shephard additionally told Kate off for her messy house (in a nice way) as he visited his close friend at her home.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Kate tearfully admitted that she is “really struggling” and that despite hoping for a “happy ending”, it feels “unsustainable”.

Speaking to the camera, the presenter said: “It feels like in terms of communication, he’s gone way back from this time last year. I mean, he could express fears and worries and all sorts of things this time last year. Whereas now, it’s ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘don’t know’ again.”

Kate, whose husband took a secret trip to Mexico for treatment, added: “People are being really kind and say I’m an inspiration, but I’m really struggling. And I think it’s important for people to know that because I’m sure they’re struggling in their life too in whatever way things have been flung at them.

“I think one of the worst things is the terrible loneliness that you get from having him here but not here. It’s really indescribable, actually, it’s… I don’t know, it’s just so hard.

“Because I can sort of see him but he’s absent and you just feel very much on your own all the time. He doesn’t look at you for a cup of tea.”

Kate added: “I still hope we’ll have a happy ending but ultimately it just feels unsustainable.”
