DEATH – Bernard Tapie died at the age of 78, his family announced this Sunday, October 3. The businessman and ex-minister suffered from double cancer of the stomach and esophagus since several years.

According to the statements of his family in La Provence , Bernard Tapie left “peacefully, surrounded by his wife, his children , his grandchildren and his brother, present at his bedside. He expressed his wish to be buried in Marseille, his city of heart. ”

The mayor of the city Benoît Payan also paid tribute to him by greeting a man “Forever Marseillais”. He wishes a popular tribute to him, but clarified that nothing will be done without consultation with the family.

Bernard Tapie’s condition had deteriorated in recent months . In December 2020, he explained that he was “at the worst point (that he has) known for 3 years”. Last May, his son Laurent had explained on BFMTV that “new tumors had appeared.” “The statistical chances at this stage are appalling,” he added.

His state of health was such that the businessman could not attend. at the appeal hearing in the Crédit Lyonnais arbitration case last June. Taking into account his situation, the public prosecutor had requested a stay against him.

He has always been very committed against the extreme right but above all for causes: his club, his city, the company … A very committed man who gave everything and we have also seen him against disease ”, a reacted Prime Minister Jean Castex from Avignon at the microphone of BFMTV . “He fought like the fighter he always was”.

The Marseille city club expressed its “deep sadness” after the announcement of the death of its former leader. “He will forever remain in the legend of the club”, greeted OM.

Bernard Tapie, from politics to sport, including justice

Born in Paris in 1943, Bernard Tapie has long participated in French political life. He was first advisor of Bouches-du-Rhône from 1994 to 1995, before embracing a nationwide career: MEP for three years, then MP for Bouches-du-Rhône between 89 and 96, before moving to briefly accede to the post of Minister of the City during the presidency of François Mitterand in 1992. He must however resign after two months for abuse of corporate assets. After a dismissal, he returned to this post for three months at the end of 1992-beginning of 1993.

One of the most striking memories of his career will undoubtedly remain his confrontation with Jean-Marie Le Pen, boss of the National Front, during a famous televised debate.

Beyond his political feats of arms, Bernard Tapie was also known for his numerous commitments in various causes, greeted by all upon the announcement of his death.

In 1977, he specialized in the takeover and resale of companies in difficulty. Nicknamed the “Zorro des entreprises”, it distinguished itself in 1990 with the takeover of Adidas, a German sports equipment giant. He built an empire and a fortune which enabled him to afford a private mansion in Paris and a luxury sailboat, the “Phocéa.”

In 1983, Bernard Tapie invested in sports activities, first by setting up a cycling team, “La Vie claire”, then by taking over the Olympique de Marseille football club. It is the beginning of a long history with the Marseille club.

In 1993, it was a few days before Marseille’s victory in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup that the corruption affair of the OM-VA match broke out. Therefore, the wrath of justice will befall Bernard Tapie, resulting in prison, personal liquidation and the loss of his elective mandates.

This father of four children will fall back on his family, around his second wife Dominique -son roc-, to make films (“Men, women, manual”, by Claude Lelouch), radio and theater. On TF1, he played the role of “Commissioner Valence”, from 2003 to 2008. After returning to business in 2009, in 2012 he took over the last titles of the Hersant group, including “La Provence”, in Marseille.

In 2008, he pocketed some 400 million euros awarded to him by arbitration in his old dispute with Crédit Lyonnais over the sale of Adidas. But, nine later, he was condemned definitively to return all the sums.

However, in the penal aspect of this judicial saga, the court released him in July 2019 from the charges. “Scam”. “My cancer has just taken a nasty blow in the face! This is proof that we must always, always, fight to the end ”, he had reacted even if the prosecution then appealed.
