George Russell is convinced that Mercedes F1 will have learned well from its setbacks in 2022 to design a much more efficient and versatile W14 than its predecessor with a radical concept, which has caused some difficulties for the team this season.
“I am convinced that our direction to take is the right ” did he declare. “We have a philosophy that we will try to adopt in our development, and I am very confident that it is the right one.”
“But in the same way, that doesn’t necessarily mean we can achieve it. We have a goal, and that’s a huge positive in itself. Now, can we achieve it? ? I have every confidence in what we can do.”
“Obviously we don’t know how much the others will improve this winter. But I am convinced that we will have a more complete car on all the circuits in 2023.”
Why such optimism in view of 2023?
Russell got a first look at the data at the factory and explains that his optimism stems from there: “To be honest, it’s data driven. We’ve done a lot of analysis on the races where we’ve been competitive, the races where we’ve been slow, and we’ve tried to understand dre why.”
“And I think we managed to understand why on certain circuits we were more competitive that others. We only managed to learn that during these races.”
“I think the three races that took place after the summer break have was very telling for us, as our performance varied between the low and high downforce circuits.”
Mercedes experienced and eliminated many problems
Invited to expand on the philosophy of Mercedes, he abstained: “I don’t want to go into details, because it’s something we’ve been working really hard on, and hopefully it will give us an edge for next year. So I don’t want to say anything that could benefit our rivals.”
“But at the end of the day, every car is different. I have to say a few times this year when I feel like we’ve figured out our car and we’re on the right track, but we’ve taken a step back with some quirks that we didn’t expect.”
“But I think we’ve had enough races now and we’ve been through so many different scenarios that I can’t really imagine there’s going to be another one that takes us by surprise.”
“We had porpoising issues, behavior issues, ground contact issues and floor damage. We’ve had so many different issues, and now we think we have a direction we need to take. Hopefully the performance will come with that.”
