Harry Redknapp or Sam Allarydyce touted for Leeds in ‘our game’ nonsense from Souness

Allardyce and Redknapp touted for Leeds job

Graeme Souness has predictably said that Harry Redknapp or Sam Allardyce would be a good choice for Leeds United because they know ‘our game’.

Leeds are currently without a permanent manager after sacking Jesse Marsch, with Under-21s boss Michael Skubala taking over on a caretaker basis after the club failed to bring in first-choice target Andoni Iraola.

Other names have been connected to the position – including Arne Slot – but it now seems likely that Skubula will be in charge until the end of the season if Leeds perform in relegation clashes against Everton and Southampton.

Redknapp has put his own name in the frame six years after leaving Birmingham, though if he believes himself to be the answer for Leeds, what the f*** is the question?

“Yeah, I would do it. I would love it. I wouldn’t say no anywhere but I am not going to get the Leeds job. There’s not a chance. But if someone asked me to go in and work there…” said Redknapp.

Allardyce last worked at West Brom, who he left in the summer of 2021 after leading them to the first relegation of his career.

But this is apparently no bar to him taking over at Leeds, with Souness saying in his Daily Mail column: ‘Whatever end of the table a team is at, their appointment of managers and coaches never fails to surprise me, and sometimes amaze me.

‘You are looking at Leeds and others down there, considering candidates who’ve not been involved in our game and who will need time to understand its demands.

‘And by the time they get it – if, indeed, they do get it – it could already be too late. So why not a Harry Redknapp or a Sam Allardyce, even as a short-term fix?

‘You need someone who knows the territory, so there are no surprises. I come back to it: there are no new ways of playing our game.’

Leeds play Everton on Saturday afternoon with Skubula in charge.

“I didn’t expect to be here to be honest,” says the former PE teacher and futsal coach. “I’m happy in my Under-21 role. Rightly or wrongly, I have no planned route in coaching. I just enjoy the job. I’m doing from day to day and try to get the best out of players.”

Wolves have somehow pulled away from relegation trouble with former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui in charge despite having no experience in ‘our game’.
