Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune could not avoid having an ominous stat after the club’s 1-0 loss to Cape Town City, which could affect his playing chances and perhaps is also a wake-up call to the club.
Khune was recalled to the side against the Citizens on Tuesday after regular number one shot-stopper Brandon Petersen picked up an injury at training leading up to the game.

Following Petersen’s errors that led to Chiefs losing crucial games, there was suggestions from some sections of supporters that the return of Khune could stabilize the team.
However, statistics have revealed that Amakhosi are worse off with the 36-year old starting in recent times.
The Glamour Boys have lost all their previous seven games with Khune starting, according to OptaJabu and that could indicate the club may actually be in a goalkeeping crisis.
The Soweto giants are yet to give another goalkeeping option, Bruce Bvuma a chance this season but he did not fare any better than Petersen when given a few opportunities last season while Bontle Molefe is yet to play.
Chiefs, as a result, may need to start looking for a top goalkeeper that can compete with Petersen, especially after they announced when they renewed Khune’s contract that he will be playing in his last season as a player.
As previously reported by the Siya crew, Amakhosi are also looking to groom 20-year old shot-stopper Lungile Nkosi, who was out of the game for nine months following injury but recently returned to the DStv Diski Challenge squad.
It is understood that Nkosi is being groomed to take over the number one position at the club some time in future, considering the club’s impeccable track record of producing great goalkeepers like Khune himself, Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez and Emile Baron in recent times.
The 20-year old is one of the two players, alongside Donay Jansen, who have been invited to train with the first team by head coach Molefi Ntseki.
In other stats, Amakhosi lost their 12th game in 2023 against the Citizens, their most in a calendar year in PSL history.
Only Richards Bay have lost more games than Chiefs this year (15), according to OptaJabu.
