Joelinton now with hopes of making his sixth Champions League appearance – Wednesday can’t come soon enough

Joelinton played his first game in the Europa League as a 19 year old.

The Brazilian on loan from Hoffenheim at Rapid Vienna in the 2016/17 season, going on to make 10 Europa League appearances that campaign, including nine as a starter, scoring two goals in the process.

Five days after his 22nd birthday, Joelinton then made his Champions League debut, playing the full 90 minutes as Hoffenheim drew 2-2 away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Exactly five years ago today, Joelinton scoring his first (and so far, only) Champions League goal, 92nd minute strike that earned Hoffenheim a 3-3 draw at home to Lyon. The Brazilian making five Champions League appearances in total, including home and away against Man City, losing 2-1 both times to the Premier League club.

Moving rapidly forward, Joelinton is now looking forward to hopefully playing his first minutes in the Champions League as a Newcastle player.

Injury leading to him missing both the AC Milan and PSG games.

Indeed, after starring for Newcastle in that superb Carabao Cup win over Man City, Joelinton came on as a sub three days later against Burnley. Seconds later and as he made his first run, the NUFC star going down and in some pain, with no contact from any opposition player.

Fans fearing the worst but after missing the PSG and West Ham matches, Joelinton was back to help Newcastle thrash Palace on Saturday.

Indeed, with his injury meaning he missed going to South America to join up with Brazil this month, hopefully that may pay longer term dividends with this tough busy period of matches.

Joelinton, just like us, can’t wait for Wednesday and Borussia Dortmund to come around.

Joelinton speaking to BBC Newcastle ahead of the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund:

“It was a difficult time and difficult start of the season for me with injuries and knocks.

“I’m happy to be back to now after a lot of work on the training ground in the last two weeks.

“I feel good.

“I think the team played really well from minute one [against Crystal Palace].

“We got after them, created chances, and we deserved to win.

“I’m very excited to play and I hope that I start the game [against Borussia Dortmud].

“I just want to be with the team to help the guys on the pitch.

“I hope I can make my Champions League debut for Newcastle United on Wednesday.”
