REGULAR electricity blackouts in Maluti-a-Phofung in the Free State bring headaches to a top 100 matric achievers producing school.

Kgola-Thuto Secondary School in Phuthaditjhaba was forced to seek alternative measures to keep the lights on in the first two days of the matric final examination.

This was after Kgola-thuto and Surrounding Schools were affected by municipal load reduction due to the recent cold front.

The examination room went dark due to an unexpected electricity cut, forcing the school management to find an immediate replacement to avoid irregularities.

The school has had an overwhelming history of outstanding matric results for years, with 162 matriculants last year achieving 97% with 52% of Bachelor’s compared to 233 matriculants sitting this year with a target of a minimum 98% pass rate.

Acting Principal Yoliswa Mzima said they acted swiftly on the power cut challenge to avoid unnecessary disturbance during the matric session.

“We have only written two papers so far, English and Economics. We haven’t had any serious critical challenges whereby learners are not able to write and sit for the session, but the other minor challenge was of a learner who did not have an ID. We have made an affidavit for the leaner but it’s primarily a family matter,” she said.

The Matric pupil Nobayeni Ntae (17) told Daily Sun that based on prior preparations, the examination is going smoothly.

“I’m well prepared to write and sit for all upcoming papers as our teachers helped us a lot by means of introducing camps, extra classes and giving us previous question papers to prepare,” she said
