Metroid Prime 3: Retro Studios wanted to make it an open world

Metroid Prime 3 : Retro Studios voulait en faire un monde ouvert

A few days before the release of the very conclusive Metroid Dread, an ex- Retro Studio comes out of its stash to tell what Metroid Prime 3 could have been.

As a fog as thick as that of the depths of Zebes continues to circle the development of Metroid Prime 4 , announced as rebooted at the beginning of the year 2019, here is the senior producer of Metroid Prime 2 and 3 Bryan Walker delivers some behind the scenes unreleased from the last episode signed Retro Studios.

LI-BER-TE

Released in 2007, just a few months after the arrival of the Wii, Metroid Prime 3 s ‘meant a new showcase of what Nintendo’s new console could offer in terms of immersion, offering the possibility of independently leading Samus Aran’s arms thanks to the Wiimote / Nunchuk combo. A certain Julo had even compared the grip to the keyboard / mouse dear to PCists.

And yet, the third opus of what should one day become a quadrilogy still had some under its elbow. Asked by the YouTube channel KIWI TALKZ , (the same one that hosted his ex-colleague Mike Wikan last month), Walker unveiled the ambitions of director Mark Pacini at the time , not without first showering him with praise:

I have had the chance to work with some very talented directors, but he is at the top. He will also probably send me an inflammatory email to have put it forward … For Metroid Prime 3, he proposed a new twist: we wanted get more out of Samus’ ship by making it playable. The game offers a few examples, but Mark’s vision was more ambitious: he also wanted to go for an open world, less linear. We were all excited about the idea. We weren’t able to prototype everything, especially the open world, because the work was enormous.
We maybe didn’t completely fulfill our objective with Metroid Prime 3, not enriched the structure enough … it was a fantastic game, we are very proud of it, but I wonder what would have been the reaction of the players to it. idea of being able to use Samus’ ship to explore an open world.

Equality?

That would indeed have been interesting. The developers of Metroid Prime 4 would they have taken the opportunity to dig this opening thanks to a console much more powerful than ‘in 2017? While waiting to find out,
