Rui Costa: “The Fan Card is preventing Benfica from launching the Red Pass”

Rui Costa was at Casa do Benfica in Albufeira where he had lunch with some members of the club, in another campaign event for the elections of the club’s governing bodies. The current president and candidate spoke of the greatness of Benfica, criticized the Adept Card and called for the members’ vote on October 9.

Lead for greatness: “It’s because of our greatness that we have to be a reference in everything and when I talk about winning, winning and winning, I’m not being a peacock, I’m being ambitious because that’s our essence. be realistic because that’s what you ask me too. I highlight in the social area the work that has been done by our Foundation.”

Força do Benfica: “Throughout my career I have come to understand the dimension of our club and the passion we have for this world outside the world. What makes each one of us really passionate about this club. We are the team with the most titles in the country and the one that he won the most. But this greatness is due to the partners and fans all over the world. This is Benfica’s strength and will be my main pillar, if I have to assume this responsibility, as I did in these three months. Nothing makes sense to me if my great strength is not working for our partners and supporters. You deserve that the club is bigger and bigger, that it has more and more titles and that in each game you leave with the greatest pride in your club.”

Problems with the Fan Card: “We also have to be a reference in the leadership of national sport and we have to be at the head of the processes with the Federation, the League and the various institutions. One of those is the fan card which, after a year and a half without fans in the stadiums, is preventing us from launching the Red Pass now . We have two huge closed zones with people who have Red Pass and that we’re going to have to accommodate elsewhere. I hope to be able to launch Red Pass as soon as possible. I know it’s almost a title for each of us to have the Red Pass. The Fan Card takes us 4,000 seats in the stadium and I have 4,000 Red Pass in that area. After a year and a half without an audience in the stadium – of course it was the pandemic’s fault, it’s a fact – but now, gentlemen, give us back the fans to the stadium. We need them.”

Appeal to vote: “Much has been said in this period of Benfica’s democracy. Anyone who deals with me knows that I didn’t step on anyone or step over anyone. Benfica will be democratic as it has to be, will have the maximum rigor as seen in these elections. I take this opportunity to appeal to the vote. If we are great, we also have to be great at the time of voting. Let’s set an example for the country and let’s vote, even for a fundamental reason. My biggest premise is that from the 9th onwards, my biggest commitment is for us to be proud of our club and to be a united family like we never were, because when we are, we are unbeatable. On the 9th, a Benfica player will win. And it’s not for having conversations or just for talking, it’s for doing. At Benfica, it is done, as it has been done in recent years. Are there things that didn’t go well? There is, but there is a lot that went well.”

Importance of Casas do Benfica: “The Houses of Benfica are the the club’s major embassies. Often, concentrated in Lisbon and in the stadium, we don’t have the exact perception of Benfica’s magic across the country and the world. I want to be very close to the partners and supporters. Feed more and more the projects of the Houses. I hope to be able to come and inaugurate the new Casa de Albufeira, which it well deserves now. We don’t just fill stadiums and pavilions with Lisbon fans.”

The elections for Benfica’s governing bodies for the 2021-2025 quadrennium will take place on Saturday, with Rui Costa and Francisco Benítez a dispute the succession to Luís Filipe Vieira, who has held the position of president for nearly 18 years, since 2003.
